D.

HOUSE

About this project:

This 2-bedroom-apartment was missing a dining room, had a too narrow kitchen and a dark living room, two steps lower than the rest of the apartment.

We took some space from the Master Bedroom, got rid of a tiny hallway and added it to the space in front of the kitchen, turning it into a dining room which also serves as a meeting point in the apartment.

In order to make the kitchen wider, we had to make the living room a little smaller. While the space isn’t missed in the living room, it makes all the difference in the kitchen: Now, two people can actually walk past each other while in the kitchen.

We also demolished almost the entire wall to the newly created dining area, leaving only a wide arch and half walls on both sides at the base cabinets - bringing light and connectivity to not only the dining area, but also the living room.

This is also accomplished by the new low cabinetry that now serves as ‘railing’ between the two levels of the living room and the rest of the apartment, instead of an ugly wrought iron railing that looked displaced inside an apartment. A new stair gives immediate access to and from the dining area and kitchen. This set up opens up the entire kitchen/living room/dining room area, making it brighter and friendlier, and adds very useful storage space at the same time.
